Monica Lane and Justine
Justine was born in March of 2006 in San Rafael California to an organization called Guide Dogs for the Blind. She was intended to be a guide dog but, when near the end of her training, her love of food forced her out of the program, she happily returned to Flagstaff where she had lived for 18 months with her raisers, Monica and Emma Lane. Her new owners, Mike and Molly, were thrilled to have Monica and Justine certified with Delta Society so that she could pursue her second career — listening to kids read. And she LOVES it. Justine listens to kids read at Killip Elementary School and participates in the summer reading program at the library, where Monica, Mike, and Molly all work. Reading is in the family for her!
Joe and Susan Harte and Pesah
Pesah, born in February 2006, came to live with Joe and Susan on Passover that year —hence her name, which is Hebrew for that festival. She is a joker who loves balls, frisbees and walking (actually she would prefer running). Despite her mischief, Pesah rises to the occasion when she knows it’s necessary. Pesah listens to children read at the library in the summer and Flagstaff Community Christian School in the winter. Licensed as a Delta therapy dog, Pesah also visits inmates in the Coconino County Jail. She would like to be an agility dog. Her older sister, Marmalade the cat, is slowly coming to appreciate her.
Marge Light and Ellie
Ellie is a 5-year-old Blackmouth Cur. Her breed is used for hunting squirrels, raccoons, and pretty much anything that will run up a tree when being chased. We found Ellie at an animal shelter and couldn’t leave without her. In the first weeks that she lived with us, I began to suspect that she had lived with a family with children. Whenever I took her to the park, she would immediately run for any children she saw — like she was looking for someone. I decided right then that she needed a life that included lots of children. Paws to Read seemed like the perfect solution. Ellie has been working with a class of third graders for a while now and really loves the attention.
